Financing

Dr. Fast Track's service is based on a government reimbursement scheme. This means that the patient must pay for the operation, and then have the cost reimbursed by HSE. The HSE will not pay in advance for your surgery abroad. That means that you must pay for the operation fee directly to the hospital when you book it.

Reimbursement of surgery costs

After the treatment has been carried out, you can apply for reimbursement of your treatment from the HSE. Provided that the operation is approved and considered a necessary operation, the Irish state will reimburse the operation fee to the equivalent value that the treatment would have been in Ireland.

There is a range of examples of healthcare referred to by a GP that are not approved as necessary healthcare treatments. This list of treatments changes – but you can ask your GP if the referral you have received is considered necessary health care.

In cases where there is a long waiting time to get a consultation from a healthcare consultant, it may be worthwhile to do this in another EU/EEA country and the HSE can also reimburse the consultation costs of meeting a specialist abroad.

Travel, accommodation and expenses

Travel, accommodation, cost of prescription medicines, and any additional costs accrued during this process is the financial responsibility of the patient. Additionally, it is important to note that maximum payments (approved under the cross-border directive) are based upon the cost of HSE healthcare provision.

Unfortunately, parents and guardians cannot expect to be reimbursed for travel and accommodation expenses in cases where children are to be treated abroad.

How you can finance your treatment

If you are not able to pay for the costs yourself, you still have the option to have the treatment carried out in another EU/EEA country.

Prior Notification

Providing prior notification to the HSE Cross Border Directive Office is optional, but it is advised, particularly if the treatment you are receiving abroad takes the form of inpatient care. Some benefits of providing prior notification to the HSE cross border directive office is that they can let you know:

- If you have followed the correct process to access healthcare abroad under the scheme
- Are eligible to claim reimbursement towards the cost of your healthcare abroad

Although providing the HSE with prior notification is not a requirement, Dr Fast Track recommends that all patients do so, further information relating to providing prior notification to the HSE can be reviewed here.
